Virtuosic instrumental music from the Italian early baroque
Along with the existing Franco-Flemish polyphonic “stile antico” in Italy around 1600, a new compositional style was becoming successful: the “stile moderno”. The priority in composition stressed more the emotions of the text in vocal music; this grew also in importance in instrumental music. It was in this way, that this bold way of performance established itself in the C17th; supported by the basso continuo, highly developed virtuosity and improvisatory ornaments were demanded of the musicians.
